This is the last posture before I show you how to do the relaxation routine. I have to emphasise that although a lot of women do yoga, it is something more and more men are turning to an all over workout. A workout that is both physically and mentally challenging is becoming a real option. Yoga is slowly losing its image of being a lightweight , fluffy pastime.

I encourage all clients who do competitive sport to do at least one yoga class a week, often reluctant but always glad of the suggestion. Like any exercise, yoga requires commitment and time to improve, you are not going to master it in a si...

NEW YORK (Reuters Life !) - Modern mothers-to-be are turning to the 4,000-year-old practice of yoga to put mind over pregnancy matters as they strengthen their bodies for the road ahead.

"There’s a level of comport and presence women cultivate when they’re practicing regularly through their pregnancies, so the changes that come are not going to shake them," Elena Brower, a New York City-based yoga instructor said in an interview.

The founder of the Virayoga studio in Manhattan, Brower has worked with celebrities Gwyneth Paltrow and Christie Turlington Burns during their pregnancies. She also has developed the DVD "Element : Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga."

"It’s about teaching women how...

Annapolis resident Barbara Yannon has always been athletic, but she said nothing has gotten her in better shape than yoga. Shannon Lee Zirkle — The Capital Lynn Gardner, a yoga instructor at Ridgely Retreat, repositions the arm of Barb VanHorn during a free introduction class to Svaroopa yoga. Advertisement

A devoted student at Golden Heart Yoga on Admiral Cochrane Drive, she takes a class once a week and always feels invigorated when she’s done.

It stretches the muscles, it helps you breathe better," she said. "I just leave there feeling totally refreshed - never tired, just good."

Consumers are cutting back, but Annapolis residents continue to pay to practice yoga, which challenges the body - and mind - through various poses ranging from a sun salutation to a downwar....

Yoga's 'bad boy' Bikram Choudhury makes no apologies

Celebrity guru Bikram Choudhury, the self-described "busiest man in the world," said he always makes time to shop Robson Street.

"It takes six hours," the L.A.-based yoga mogul said, before laughing : "And I buy all the junk. I love it, you know ?"

So in-between giving a sold-out lecture to more than 400 people at the Edgewater Casino tonight - and judging the Western Canadian Hatha Yoga Championships Sunday - Choudhury says he’ll find time for some retail release.

It’s his "disease," he chuckled, describing his love of shopping.

Speaking with Choudhury, founder of the hot and sweaty Bikram Yoga empire, including more than 350 affiliated studios around the world, is an entertaining and slightly dizzying experience.

The 63-year-old charmer easily hops from topic to topic. And he’s especially effusive about the benefits of his trademarked Bikram Yoga, a 90-minute class distinguished from other yoga styles by a series of 26 postures practiced in a set order, in a hot room of about 37 degrees C.

"I offer longest life - not life in a wheelchair," he said. "Life. Quality life. The best life possible [that] any human being can offer you. That, I do my job."

It’s a job he’s been doing for more than five decades....

Yoga Improves Heart Control

The heart is a unique organ composed of muscle intricately wired by the nervous system. New research suggests the practice of yoga can improve cardiac health by improving control of the nervous system.

For millennia, yoga practitioners have enjoyed benefits of the technique which features breathing exercises, stretching, postures, relaxation, and meditation.

Heart rate variability, a sign of a healthy heart, has been shown to be higher in yoga practitioners than in non-practitioners, according to research to be published in a forthcoming issue of the International Journal of Medical Engineering and Informatics.

The autonomic nervous system regulates the heart rate through two routes — the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The autonomic system causes the heart rate to rise, while the parasympathetic slows it. ...
