Explosivement relaxant.

When Chocolate and Chakras Collide

The words of Ziggy Marley’s “Love Is My Religion” floated over 30 people lying on yoga mats in a steamy, dim loft above Madison Avenue on Friday. All had signed up for a strange new hybrid of physical activity : first an hour of vigorous, sweaty yoga, then a multicourse dinner of pasta, red wine and chocolate. As soon as the lights went up, dinner was served on the floor : an (almost) seamless transition designed to allow the yogis to taste, smell and digest in a heightened state of awareness.

“It’s a little weird to sit on a sweaty yoga mat and eat soup,” said one woman, not pausing as she spooned up a smooth, cinnamon-spiked butternut squash purée from a bamboo bowl. “But people are used to doing some weird things in yoga class.”

Joy Pierson, the chef at the nearby Candle Café, a vegan restaurant that supplied the meal, sat cross-legged at the front of the room, encouraging everyone to breathe in slowly. “Ssssmell the squassshhhh waaaafting through the air,” she intoned.

Friday’s event at Exhale Spa was the first of a series of “Yoga for Foodies” sessions, devised by a young, adventurous yoga teacher, David Romanelli, and coming soon to restaurants in Chicago, Cleveland and Dallas.

Calling his mission “yoga for the Everyman,” Mr. Romanelli, 36, plays Grateful Dead songs during class, wears sweat pants rather than s...

Can't sleep? Try yoga

The irony wasn’t lost on Graydon Moffat : She was making her living helping others relax, but she was a stress case herself, unable to enjoy a good night’s sleep.

Ms. Moffat, a Toronto yoga instructor, was roused from her slumber almost every day between 2:30 and 4 a.m. She eventually threw a washcloth over her alarm clock – the bright green digits were a painful reminder of how little sleep she was getting.

“Sometimes I would be so desperate that I would go get something to drink – like alcohol,” she recalls. “I would try things like banana and warm milk. ... If I would get really ...

Rwandans reach out to yoga as trauma therapy

KIGALI (Reuters Life !) - Fluorescent sandals litter the entrance to a church on the outskirts of Rwanda’s undulating capital Kigali. A coffee-colored river slithers by in the valley below.

On the floor, a dozen middle-aged women sit contorted in knots, wearing puckered expressions which explode into wide smiles, accompanied by a chorus of giggles - a rare spectacle in a culture known for its quiet reservation.

In the dappled gloom Seraphine recounts how, while seeking refuge in a similar church 16 years ago, soldiers beat her with a boy’s severed arm - just one of many events which has caused over a decade of paralyzing trauma and depression.

She says yoga helped her deal with the shock of witnessing and surviving genocide.

"When you do yoga, you start believing that it’s going to relieve your soul," she says.

The horrifying chronicle of Seraphine’s survival and subsequent emotional funk is far from unique.

Almost one in three Rwandans suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) resulting from the 1994 genocide in which 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus were slaughtered, according to a 2009 study by the Ministry of Health.

People with PTSD often relive the traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks and have problems concentrating, sleeping, and feel isolated and detached, according to the...

Meet Kent Katich, yoga guru of the NBA

LOS ANGELES — Baron Davis shifts from one yoga pose to another as Kent Katich, the Clippers’ "yoga coach," guides the veteran guard through a pregame routine in the Staples Center locker room.

Yes, the Clippers have a yoga coach. It’s the kind of thing that might raise eyebrows elsewhere, but hey, it’s Hollywood. Isn’t everyone into those kinds of things out here ? You know, drinking wheatgrass, driving Priuses, doing yoga.

Of course, this is still the NBA, in which Gatorade abounds, SUVs are the ride of choice and yoga has definitely never been a legitimate part of the equation — until now.

Katich isn’t the first person with NBA ties to promote the practice of yoga (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been a fan since the mid-1970s), but Katich is certainly revolutionizing the way NBA players approach the Eastern tradition.

[+] EnlargeDirk Nowitzki Dirk Schlickman photo Dirk Nowitzki is one of many NBA players who trust Katich’s instruction to assist their playing careers.

He is the only yoga instructor working full-time with an NBA team, currently or — as far as he can tell — in the history of the league.

"I’ve been around a long time," Katich said, "and I’ve never seen it, never heard about it, and it’s the kind of thing that I would have heard of."

The impact of yoga on players is difficult to quantify. The positive results from downward-facing dogs, half-moons and warrior poses are not the kinds of things that show ...

Modified yoga can take scoliosis to the mat

To see Kim Wagaman on a yoga mat is to witness a body perfectly aligned and in harmony with itself.

She’s a yoga instructor, after all, so such flexibility is a given, right ?

Not in her case. Wagaman, 34, of Sacramento, Calif., was once so restricted by scoliosis that she spent most of her teenage years in a neck-high brace.

"I made a conscious effort to hide the back of my body," Wagaman recalls. "There was all this insecurity and denial. And there’s this drive to fix the issue."

Her parents already had ruled out spinal-fusion surgery as too invasive. So as a junior in high school, Wagaman put away the brace she wore 23 hours a day and started to look for alternatives.

For her, the better way turned out to be yoga. In her early 20s, Wagaman started practicing and eventually studied under Palo Alto, Calif.-based yoga ...

Tova Scharnberg teeters back and forth as she struggles to hold a yoga pose, her ankle wobbling violently as she fights to balance on one foot.

A guiding hand reaches from behind to steady her, and for a brief moment, she’s poised, balanced and serene — a regular yoga master. Then something catches her attention, and the 22-month-old abandons her mother and goes flying across the room to investigate.

These brief moments of concentration are the building blocks for Itsy-Bitsy Yoga, an activity class for parents and their young children. Instructor Wendy Smereka, 36, has been...

India offers yoga expertise to Sweden

India has offered its expertise in yoga and Ayurveda to Sweden.

Many countries, including the U.S., France, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Canada, have already asked for teachers and qualified manpower in this area, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said after inaugurating Indo-Swedish Health Week with his Swedish counterpart Maria Larsson.

“Sweden may also find Ayurveda and yoga to be quite useful and beneficial in the public health area,” he said.

Calling upon Sweden to be a partner in developing health infrastructure in India, the Minister said that greater investment was expected particularly in the fields of diagnostics and pharmaceuticals. “The potential for investments is huge. We would, however, like the partnerships to be structured in a way that allows transfer of technology leading to sustainable capacity building,” he said.

From his side, he offered India’s expertise in the field of high quality and cheap generic drugs. India has the highest number of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drugs outside the U.S. and could be a potential exporter to Sweden, Mr. Azad said. “..
